Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a deep examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake right now.
