Time is optimal to alter Man Utd's system - Amorim declares.

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes was among multiple first-team players to miss the Boxing Day win against Newcastle United.

Boss Ruben Amorim argues that switching Man Utd's formation due to external scrutiny would have been "the end" for him.

Initially against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his trademark three-at-the-back formation with wide defenders and chose to use an orthodox four-man defense shielded by two defensive midfielders.

He himself conceded this at times transformed into a six-man defensive block in the closing stages as his team clung on for a victory - securing just their second clean sheet of the season.

Despite he once famously stated that even the highest authority could force him to tweak his system, Amorim maintains the capacity to utilize alternative setups has always been part of his long-term vision.

Yet, he emphasizes he could only make the switch when his team were faring sufficiently well - or else it would appear as if he was bowing to outside pressure.

"When I came here the previous campaign, I understood maybe I lacked the players to perform effectively in that system, but it was the commencement of a project," he stated.

"We were trying to establish an style. Now is a different moment. We are missing a lot of personnel, and we have to adapt, so they comprehend why we are changing.

"The change isn't because of the pressure of you guys, or the faithful.

"When you discuss altering the system constantly, I can't make a change because the players will think I'm altering things because of you and I believe that is a disaster for the manager.

"Only when we are getting results in our system, that is the opportunity to change.

"We are going to develop into a more complete squad because when all the personnel are available, we are not intending to use a back three all the time."

Squad Challenges Persist

With just two wins in eight games before defeating Newcastle, it is arguable whether Amorim is accurate to say his team have been in good form.

He is, nonetheless, operating with a depleted roster, with seven first-team players already unavailable for the upcoming fixture against struggling Wolves.

That total will grow if midfielder Mason Mount fails to shake off the knock that led to his exit from the Newcastle game at half-time.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is one of those who will be absent for the Wolves clash, despite the fact he is understood to be pushing his manager to allow him to make a comeback after his hamstring injury.

"Fernandes is already saying he has to practice," said Amorim. "However there is no chance he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. You can quote me on that."

Fernandes' Leadership Endures

Nevertheless, the Portuguese star will likely continue to be deeply engaged, as while most injured stars watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed monitoring the pre-match routines from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his captain to continue providing guidance.

"He is a leader," he affirmed. "He must not be the type of player that when he is absent, he's silent and speaking. He's always communicating. That's why he's the skipper.

"He has bad things sometimes - his mannerisms he moves his arms - but he has a multitude of good things. Even after he finishes treatment, he heads to observe the other guys practicing. There are a lot of aspects that go unnoticed.

"I don't know if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a leader."

Return Schedule for Injured Personnel

While the precise timeline for Fernandes' return - and that of other injured stars like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains uncertain, by the end of January, United will welcome back Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international competition.
