Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Table
Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative showcasing angels, demons, and dark forces expanding in power within the city.
Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.
The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced
The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and introduced the premier party of heroes who will branch out from the main group to embark on their own adventure, distinct from the remaining groups.
This warrior group consists of Teor Pridesire (played by Travis), Thimble (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).
Why Split the Party?
With an extensive roster, it was evident from the outset that maintaining everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.
This explains, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Overture, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Explorers.
Characteristics of the Soldiers Table
Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.
Initially, characters like the hesitant healer the cleric might look out of place, but the events of episode 3 show why these five characters are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to go next after a violent first encounter with the enemy group.
An old friend of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, entering Thjazi’s hideout, striking Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to sell off.
Casimir then paid off his debts and escaped to a secure base in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.
Individual Reasons
Secondly, each adventurer has a specific drive to exit the metropolitan area:
- The rogue, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires revenge.
- The knowledgeable figure knows Timmony and cautions that it is a nasty environment.
- The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to kill the target and instead freed him, have no other options.
- Yet, their position as important members in House Halovar could assist the team enter places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Furthermore, The grateful character vowed a unbreakable promise to The savior for his deliverance and will now go with him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Lastly, all of them are sought by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:
- The rogue and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
- The strong figure and The cleric defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- The fighter is marked for death by the family.
This means them little choice but to head to the northern region in search of Casimir.
Upcoming Developments
Based on the recent installment’s follow-up content, we discover that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Seekers and Schemers parties.
